Monday, February 22, 2010

Once everyone was accounted for and we realized we had all made it, we learned that we were on the island of Malta. The natives went out of their way to be friendly to us. The day was rainy and cold and we were already soaked to the bone, but they built a huge bonfire and gathered us around it. Paul pitched in and helped. He had gathered up a bundle of sticks, but when he put it on the fire, a venomous snake, roused from its torpor by the heat, struck his hand and held on. Seeing the snake hanging from Paul’s hand like that, the natives jumped to the conclusion that he was a murderer getting his just deserts. Paul shook the snake off into the fire, none the worse for wear. They kept expecting him to drop dead, but when it was obvious he wasn’t going to, they jumped to the conclusion that he was a god! The head man in that part of the island was Publius. He took us into his home as his guests, drying us out and putting us up in fine style for the next three days. Publius’s father was sick at the time, down with a high fever and dysentery. Paul went to the old man’s room, and when he laid hands on him and prayed, the man was healed. Word of the healing got around fast, and soon everyone on the island who was sick came and got healed.

Good Afternoon Beloved,

Ooooohhhhh! I couldn’t wait to write this today’s offering. This has been percolating like brewing coffee in my spirit since Saturday. Shouting in my heart I hear, YOU HAVE AN ASSIGNMENT, AND IT WILL BE COMPLETED! Paul, went through. No… Paul went “through-through”! Oftentimes we hear of Job’s suffering and triumph, but Paul’s life consisted of one catastrophe after another. In this instance, he had just came through shipwreck. As they are sitting around a fire trying to dry out and get warm, a venomous snake latches onto the his hand. Some versions call it a “viper”, the King James calls it a “beast”. A BEAST… there was a ‘Beast’ on his hand. Paul shook it off into the fire and kept doing what he was doing. The natives, were waiting for him to die. When he didn’t, they naturally assumed he had to have been some sort of ‘god’. They had never seen anything like this before. That was only one portion of Paul’s testimony. Remember 2 Corinthians 11? He was an Israelite.. a Hebrew, and servant of Christ who had been whipped many times, five different times the Jewish leaders gave him 39 lashes. Three times he was beaten with rods. He was put in prison and faced death many times. Once he was stoned. He was shipwrecked 3 times. He had faced danger from rivers and from robbers, from his own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles. He faced danger in the cities, in the deserts, and on the seas. He faced danger from men who claim to be believers but were not. He worked hard and long, enduring many sleepless nights. He suffered hunger and thirst. He experienced the cold, without enough clothing to keep him warm. He had the daily burden of his concern for all of the churches. This is not even including his initial “meeting” with the Lord when He was knocked off his horse and experienced 3 days of blindness (Acts 9:9). Yet, he could boldly state in 2 Corinthians 12:10 ~

So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

What a statement! Some of us lose it when the cable goes out! … Not you, but some people I heard about somewhere on the planet. Paul went through, indescribable agony, but in his heart and mind, he had one thing that kept him… a WORD from the Lord! He knew that he could not die until he went to Rome. Paul was human. I’m sure he felt how we would have felt in his position, but his trust was in the God of his salvation. His encounter with Jesus on the road that day forever sealed in his mind his destiny. He became a servant of the Living God. This was a man who was looked upon as a great intellectual, upper class in his society. He was well respected, revered and feared, but at one point he made the statement that:

“…Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ…” {Philippians 3:8}

We will get to the other side… no matter what “beast” tries to attach itself to us or hinder us. Shake it off. Our mission will be accomplished. Smash through every stumbling block, speak to every mountain, lay aside every weight until your purpose is fulfilled. Some go through more than others. That is why it is essential that we pray for one another and help each other.

“…For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.”
[Ecclesiastes 4:10]

What is a “successful” life? In God’s eyes, it is finishing the task He gave us. Together, with the help of our beautiful Savior, we will make it!

… and that Beloved is Good News!

Thursday, November 19, 2009

After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, you know. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple: and He that sits on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.
[Revelation 7:9-17]

‘International Lover’

Good Afternoon Beloved,

My teenage years were filled with Prince. I had all of his albums, cassettes, posters, magazine articles –you name it, I had it. I still remember my mom and I camping outside the ticket office all night, in the rain, in order to get that precious ‘Capital Center’ ticket in my hand (my poor mom… she didn’t even like Prince… awww the things you do for your children). Well, he had a song called ‘International Lover’. In the song he explicitly boasts of his physical prowess. You may ask, “Regina, where are you going with this one?”… well, walking to work (so many of my daily thoughts drop into my heart while I’m walking), I believe I felt the Lord telling me that He is the REAL International Lover. He loves every man, woman and child on the planet. Every descendant of Adam and Eve… and that covers everybody. Revelation 7 ignited in my heart. If we’re not careful, we can innocently fall under the belief that Jesus is an American. It is very subtle. It can happen in the way that we look at the styles and customs of other nations and shake our heads. Now, sin is sin and the bible pulls no punches as to what is right and what is wrong. The 10 Commandments are for everybody, no matter what culture they were born into. But, we should never confuse ’righteousness’ with ‘personal taste’. You may not enjoy the driving beat of a Carribbean song, and their jubilant praise dances, but to call it ‘worldly’ would be error. Something happened in my life that brought out my own craziness… can I tell on myself? Arlene and I got the chance to visit beautiful Cancun a few years ago. It was the trip of a lifetime, but getting there was another story. The first flight was canceled, and that threw the whole trip schedule off. Long story short, we found ourselves trying to communicate with people who did not speak English. We’re in their country, frustrated because they can’t understand us! Even in the midst of chaos, we had to laugh at ourselves. I joked to Arlene, “Girl, we are really American!“. Everyone was really friendly and helpful to us, even though they were just as confused as we were. We really don’t mean any harm at all, some things are deeply ingrained in us, and it takes something as simple as what we experienced to bring it to our attention. Some cultures drink wine with their meals, like we drink soft drinks. That sounds strange to us who have been in the church for a while. The bible speaks against ‘drunkenness’… it didn’t say not to drink wine at all (me personally, I don’t drink wine because I never liked the taste). Now, if a person has a problem with alcoholism, don’t drink anything (that’s what I’d say). If the thing is going to lead you into sin, stay far, far away (that’s bible). Another case in point, I was watching “Say Yes to the Dress” (my daughter loves those shows, actually she loves clothes). A young lady from India picked out her wedding gown that was going to be dyed red. She explained that in their culture, white gowns are worn to funerals and her family would be “shocked” to see her in a white gown on her wedding day. That would be like a person in our culture wearing a black gown to their wedding… we would think that a little morbid. See? It is good to learn as much as we can from other people. In evangelizing, it is beneficial to know a little something about where the person is coming from. What is offensive in their culture? What do they believe? How do they think, why do they do what they do? Another character trait of Jesus, was that you always found Him in the middle of whatever was going on. Teaching in the temple, speaking to the multitudes on the hillside, preaching from a fisherman’s boat, talking to the children, going to weddings, hanging out at the home of friends, attending dinner parties at the homes of tax collectors (). Jesus has always been a ‘people person’. It was that very mission that brought Him from His Throne in Glory… His love for and compassion towards the children of Adam and Eve that He created. It is a timeless and eternal love that will never ever end…

As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what He taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to You that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Good Afternoon Beloved,

This thought has been in my heart all morning. I’ve been thinking how many people spend so many years afraid of God and misinterpreting His Word. This is nothing new. I grew up around seasoned saints who taught us to fear and reverence God. Nothing wrong with that, in fact we could use a little more reverence. However, that school of thought, while sincerely trying to keep us from blaspheming God, and ending up with a one-way ticket to a very real lake of fire, it inadvertently did something else. It made us so afraid of God that we could not enjoy Him. His Holiness demands obedience; His Heart desires love and fellowship. If we can ever get the two in harmony with our spirit, we would be the greatest treasures ever, and exactly what God intended when He created us in the first place. God is powerful, He is magnificent, He is great, He created every living creature on the face of the earth and placed within that creature the ability to reproduce after its kind. It is amazing that a man and a woman can come together, and produce a child with traits, not only of both of them, but other people in their family. Not only that, but this same couple can have multiple children of different shapes, sizes, facial structures, temperaments, coloring, etc. That is what God wants to… children of different colors, shapes, sizes, temperaments, hair textures, that have His nature. People who He can look at and say, “Now THAT one is MINE!”. Whew! God is beyond amazing. A friend of mine had a really inspired thought. She said that, “Science is the study of God… they just don’t know it”…(thanks Tina). Everywhere they try to go, He is there. When they try to go around Him, they only end up frustrating themselves, and calling the phenomenon “inexplicable”. Well, the “Inexplicable”… He is our Lord, our King, our Savior, our Sovereign, our Shelter, our Strong Tower, our Kinsmen Redeemer, our Waymaker, our Peace, our Counselor, our Doctor, our Lawyer
