Holy Bible: Genuine Soul Food

One day Elisha went to the town of Shunem. A wealthy woman lived there, and she urged him to come to her home for a meal. After that, whenever he passed that way, he would stop there for something to eat. She said to her husband, “I am sure this man who stops in from time to time is a holy man of God.  Let’s build a small room for him on the roof and furnish it with a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp. Then he will have a place to stay whenever he comes by.” One day Elisha returned to Shunem, and he went up to this upper room to rest. He said to his servant Gehazi, “Tell the woman from Shunem I want to speak to her.” When she appeared, Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tell her, ‘We appreciate the kind concern you have shown us. What can we do for you? Can we put in a good word for you to the king or to the commander of the army?’” “No,” she replied, “my family takes good care of me.” Later Elisha asked Gehazi, “What can we do for her?” Gehazi replied, “She doesn’t have a son, and her husband is an old man.” “Call her back again,” Elisha told him. When the woman returned, Elisha said to her as she stood in the doorway, “Next year at this time you will be holding a son in your arms!” “No, my lord!” she cried. “O man of God, don’t deceive me and get my hopes up like that.” But sure enough, the woman soon became pregnant. And at that time the following year she had a son, just as Elisha had said.

“It’s Not Dead”

Good Morning Beloved,

Ever had a dream that just died.  Something you’ve been waiting for, years have passed, and it just has not happened.  Ever just said, “forget it”…. it’s not going to happen.  It could be a career, a home, marriage or having a child like the woman in 2 Kings.  From all appearances, this lady had a good life.  She had a good husband with which she shared mutual respect, a good family, a nice home and she was wealthy.  She was probably envied by those around her.  She was also very generous, thoughtful, and she loved God.  We can tell by her treatment of God’s man-servant.  She wanted nothing more than to be a blessing to Elisha.  Elisha saw her heart and was so grateful that he wanted to do something for her.  Eisha was a powerful prophet, trained at the side of another great prophet “Elijah” (you know ‘call-down-fire-from-heaven Elijah’).  When Elijah was escorted to heaven, Elisha asked for, and received, a double portion of his anointing.  That means he was twice as powerful as Elijah, and everyone knew it…including the king.  He had the ear of the king, and great influence in the land.  Whatever she asked him for, he would have been able to provide.  She never asked for anything but Elisha’s servant noticed that the woman did not have a son.  When Elisha told her she would give birth to a son by the next year…we see another side of this gracious lady.  That was a sore subject with her.  She had probably resigned herself to it never happening, and here he comes.  It would be like a wound that never fully healed, but a scab had developed over it.  Elisha in essence ripped off the scab revealing wound.  It hurt.  She did not want to get her hopes up.  She simply could not allow herself to be disappointed again… but something was going on.  Her servant’s heart had not only garnered the attention of Elisha, his servant Gehazi, her family and the townspeople; but more importantly the Almighty God of Heaven had noticed.  He saw her actions and knew her motivation, and in the end, blessed her with her greatest heart’s desire.  That same God, that took notice of the little woman from Shunem, is the same God that sees us right now.

… and that Beloved is Good News
